From my central Edinburgh tapestry studio I run a range of workshops, from small groups and master classes to private tuition and artist mentoring. However, some of these may be purchased from your tutor. Payment for either course should be by cheque in advance to the tutor. Weaving Workshops - on going - 9 sessions a year Jane and Pat Taylor are running a series of “weaving workshop” for weavers who would like to learn how to design, improve their tapestry techniques and to explore the work of other weavers. Today, tapestry weaving is practised across the UK, although there are a high number of weavers in Scotland, due to the Dovecot Studio and Edinburgh College of Art and in the south of England, due to the workshops at West Dean College, Sussex. One to four- day weaving courses are held throughout the year in Janet's own studio in Nether Stowey, Somerset. Location: Quartermile, EH3: Buses: 23, 27, 35, 47, 300: Learning & improving tapestry weaving skills. You should expect to complete a finished woven sample over the two days. Some of the techniques covered are: plain weaving, stepped/soft diagonals, hatching, dovetailing, blending, shaping and more. There was no tradition of tapestry weaving in Scotland prior to the founding of the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh in 1912, but in the twentieth century through to the present this ‘slow craft’ has come to have a special place in the country’s arts community. For example, in 2018, you could purchase, from your tutor, a plain wooden frame loom at $25–$30, bobbins at $7.00 each, 100g of 12/12 cotton warp thread at $15.00 (which is enough to weave the three tapestries of the Tapestry weaving 1 course).
